about

A musical exploration in the spirit of the Black Arts, Black Power &
Free Jazz movements of the 1950's-80', AbstrakT Blak was commissioned by
the Studio Museum of Harlem, to be used as a soundtrack for a four
month retrospective exhibiting the abstract visual art of black artists in
these movements. Producers Cary and Chance used this
opportunity to create an inspired soundtrack, free from the constraints of
commercial categories of music. The eclectic tracks masterfully
draw on all forms of black music, focusing on the clave as a constant
unifying force. ABSTRAKT BLAK is jazz, gogo, hip-hop, afro-Caribbean,
bebop, ambient spoken word, R&B and more. From track to track, genre is
in the ear of the beholder. The lead single for the album, a "Dream
Deferred" features the poem by Langston Hughes set to music and featuring spoken
word performed by "Chance," with subtle yet powerful vocals by Marc
Cary, revealing a compelling new side to this keyboard talent. The cd
is being simultaneously released and promoted with Marc Cary;s FOCUS(Motéma Cat#MTM-0005.)
AbSTraKT BlaK, is the first in a creative boutique series titled by the same name. With the next volume the current
generation of Black Poets will tribute Langston Hughes with versions of his poems set to music composed and produced by
by Marc Cary and Shon 'Chance Miller'.
