about

Marc Cary releases a Go Go rework of George Duke’s classic track FEEL on Feb 19 2019. You can listen to the track here : bit.ly/FEELCARY.

A long term fan of George Duke, Cary takes the Go Go inspiration from his DC childhood and reworks FEEL, the title track from Duke’s fifth studio album, released in 1974 through MPS Records. George Duke began experimenting with synthesizer orchestration on this album, which is considered the beginning of his unique style, and underpins Cary’s fascination with the album and this track in particular.

Cementing the Washington DC Go Go stamp of approval, the track features Go Go pioneer and member of Familiar Faces, Milton “Go Go Mickey” Freeman, and is backed up by a solid DC bred lineup of Tarus Mateen (bass), Teddy Crockett (guitar) and Russell Carter.

The vocal feature on this re-work is a man who made his mark on vocalists the world over, in the New York tradition of nurturing peerless legends who often cut their own path.

The Master of Ceremonies , Ron Grant, who passed late last year, has produced several successful showcases over the past twenty plus years at top New York City nightspots, including The Blue Angel, Chas & Wilson's and Cheetah epitomizes the type of unique legend that new York City can nurture. Ron Grant was deeply woven into the major industry too. With background vocal, writing and arranging credits with some of the top artists and albums, from Mariah Carey’s “Butterfly” to The Temptations, Bryan McKnight and more. His voice has also graced many ad campaigns for brands worldwide including AT&T, M&M, Pizza Hut and Frito Lay. Ron’s connectivity to both the industry and the artists was largely in part due to his senior executive role at Sony Music. During it’s time, artists from Prince and Jamie Foxx, to Mariah Carey, Valerie Simpson and Chaka Khan as well as international sensations Beverley Knight and more, graced the stage at the long standing Ron Grant and Friends open mic night, which also became home to notable NY vocal artists such as Raine Torae, who were not only mentored by Ron, but also carry the torch of his legacy today.

Ron’s departure followed closely behind another unique legends of New York, Roy Hargrove. Both Grant and Hargrove uniquely contributed to the local fabric of a scene in constant development through their devotion to bandstand development. Ron Grant and friends, the longest and most prestigious open-mic night recognized worldwide.

Grammy nominated Keyboardist and composer Marc Cary, who also carries the baton of bandstand mentorship via his longstanding jazz jam The Harlem Sessions” met Ron Grant in 2015, when their respective recording sessions crossed over at Universal recording Studios in Hackensack. Cary was laying down the foundation for an interpretation of one of his favorite compositions - the much loved George Duke’s seminal “Feel”. Upon hearing the instrumental, Ron casually asked if he could lay down a performance of the vocal, and promptly laid down this sublime performance of this classic piece. “feel has been one of our music menui staples at The Harlem Sessions,” says Cary “so it was an unimaginable and beautiful experience to record this song with Ron Grant in particular. I hope to spread some light on Ron’s legacy here in New York through this track, as he rarely recorded as a lead vocalist. It feels very fitting that of all the tracks we could have worked on together, that it was Feel”.

lyrics

Time brings me you
You bring me love
Stirring my soul
Searing and whole
Now I can see
Now I can feel
Now I can live
Now I can build
Feel…
Life in me.
Touch my mind,
See what is in me.
Feel…
Life in you.
Touch your mind,
We come almost as one,
In one… as one.
Feel…
Soul to soul.
Don’t be afraid,
Life lives on a common ground of love… to survive.
Sometimes…
It’s hard to see.
Look around,
Be conscious of what you cannot see… in me.
It’s there to see.
It’s there to see.
